About

The Greater Greenville Sanitation (GGS) District Commission consists of five members who are residents of the special purpose district. The governor appoints the commission members upon recommendation of the Greenville County Council for terms of five years. 

The GGS commission operates the district for the collection of refuse, garbage and trash and it also provides for its disposal. The district covers the metropolitan Greenville area outside the municipalities. The district’s operations are funded through a tax millage and collection fees, both of which must be approved by Greenville County Council.

The Board meets at 1600 W. Washington Street, Greenville, on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 4:00 p.m.

Powers and duties:

  • Sue and be sued
  • Adopt, use and alter a corporate seal
  • Define a quorum for its meetings
  • Make bylaws for the management and regulation of its affairs
  • Acquire, by gift, purchase, or otherwise, lands or interest therein
  • Expend monies for the purpose of performing the duties and functions established in the act
  • Designate routes and procedures necessary for regular and systematic collection of refuse, trash and garbage
  • Employ all personnel and purchase equipment necessary to discharge its purposes
  • Purchase or lease lands and building necessary to the administration of the affairs of the district
  • Collect refuse, garbage and trash within and outside the district to the extent authorized by the Act No. 761 (1971)
